The Story – May 15, 2019: Charlotte & Jonathan

From the desk of Don Merrill:

Do you remember when Susan Boyle came out and shocked everyone with her voice?   Can you believe that was over 10 years ago?  By the way, she didn’t win Britains Got Talent that year.  She came in second to a dance troup called Diversity.

Well, it happened again in early 2012.  A duo billed as Charlotte Jaconelli and Jonathan Antoine came on the show and completely leveled everyone singing “The Prayer.”

Here is a look back at that amazing performance:

The similarities to the Britain’s Got Talent debut and initial judge and audience reaction to Susan Boyle was noted by many:

“It was almost a case of deja vu. An overweight, badly dressed contestant lumbers awkwardly on to the Britain’s Got Talent stage, prompting the judges to roll their eyes at the inevitable car-crash of a performance to follow . . . only to be wowed by the powerful, pitch-perfect voices of the unlikely stars.” Simon Cowell noted that Jonathan’s voice sounded as good as Luciano Pavarotti‘s, and he hadn’t heard such a superb opera voice in years.

Interestingly, Charlotte & Jonathan didn’t win BGT either.  They came in second to a dancing dog act known as Ashleigh and Pudsey.

Charlotte & Jonathan soon became Jonathan & Charlotte and they were offered a £1million record deal by Simon Cowell on his record label Syco.  They worked together until 2014 when they were both offfered individual contracts with Sony Classical Records.
