The Story – May 9, 2019: The Day The Earth Stood Still

From the desk of Don Merrill:

Actually, in my lifetime there were three moments where time seemed to come to a complete stop:

1.  11/22/1963 – the assassination of John F. Kennedy.

2.  9/11/2001 – the suicide attacks against the World Trade Center.

3.  12/14/2002 – the Sandy Hook Elementary massacre.

Depending on who you are and where you were you may have other dates that are more important to you.  I know many, many people will list 4/4/1968, the day Martin Luther King was assassinated in Memphis, TN.

I am not sure why the Sandy Hook massacre hit me as hard as it did.  I was still working then and my life and my business went on hold for a week or two.  I was watching the news reports almost 24 hours a day.  I just couldn’t stop.

The only bright spot I can remember from that period of time was the opening of the television show “The Voice” on Monday following the attack.  Here is a look back at that moment:

I still tear up every time I see that video.

But, do you know who created that song?  Hallelujah? His name was Leonard Cohen.  “Hallelujah” was first released on Cohen’s studio album Various Positions in 1984, and he sang it during his Europe tour in 1985.

The song had limited initial success but found greater popularity through a 1991 cover by John Cale, which formed the basis for a later cover by Jeff Buckley. “Hallelujah” has been performed by almost 200 artists in various languages.

So here is the original version by the original writer and  performer:

Some of you will remember this version of the song:

So, what were the moments in your life where time stood still?
